Get this Month's Story HereWhen it comes to S.L.U.M. Lords, don't ever judge a book by it's cover!
Our Story in this series, takes place in southern Alberta, approximately 10 kms from our home and witnessed by the Editor and Members of our Staff!
Now it's not everyday that we view situations first hand, but last Sept 2002, had us questioning the integrity of our community.
We were so taken by the actions of the woman, so unfondly  known in Vulcan County, as "Marg Baby", that we felt it was high time, the coniving ways of selective forgetfulness along with wealth and power, be brought to readers attention as an example of what goes on "out there".
What's so special about Marg Baby? She's a petite, 4' nothing-100 pound, 65ish, 70's polyester attire, ringlet hair styled individual, who will smile and test your virtue to the max!
This Month's Article GrafShe'll sell you a house and test your Lawyer's abilities, by reselling the same house to someone else and then waits to see how far you can financially take legal actions, before your finances and losses are exhausted and have to cease pursuing her.
The same goes for rental units that are in her ownership. I personally learned this first hand, eight years ago, when originally attempting to move into the area and rented a single two story retail outlet with an upstairs suite on Main St. Vulcan. Upon arrival with a loaded 5 ton, someone else had just moved in and was unpacking. She was in and I was not!
Now even tho there was no where to dump my truckload and my plans were all shot to ......, the most baffling part of it all was, how was I getting my money back!
Attempts to get the money back, cost $500-$1,500 in Lawyer's Fees, that might or might not get a judgement that's favorable. Acquiring a favorable judgement, all depends on the evidence presented, pics, receipts or paperwork one has accumulated. Then better yet, even after hours of grief, time out of a busy routine and perhaps having to resheduele other more present day appointments, to get that favorable judgement, the question remains, "How Do You Get Paid?"
Now picture this, once the first battle is won, you can only hope that she honors the judgement and if not, you're outta luck. Then again, if honor had anything to do with it, there'd be no reason to go to court!
Rumor has it that this tiny, aged, polyester-dressed woman has a net worth of close to $10 Million Dollars!!
Rumor has it that she owns a substantial amount of property in Edmonton Alberta as well and testing people is the name of her game.
Rumor also has it that her own son danced the very same dance with his mom and lost, even though the court order was in his favor.
Marg Baby knows all too well that even though you win, the additional finanacial costs of going to a Court of Queens Bench to further impose judgement, entails further financial costs and time, which everyday folks cannot afford to pursue. Afterall, who has $4,000 and two years to blow to prove a point and gain nothing in return? Who has hours on end of concern and appointments out of a working day routine?
Now thanks to the beauty of our Canadian Legal System, Marg also knows that even though you win, you still lose. To further pursue a favored court judgement, a lien can be placed on her assets, providing that you know What they Are. Due to the Privacy Act, if you do not know what she owns so that you can put a lien on it, too bad so sad.
With a Lien, providing that you are one of the first two in line, you can legally be returned your cash award, IF  the said property under your lien is sold. IF this property never gets sold, then you must keep renewing your lien, in hopes that someday Marg Baby goes through some financial difficulties and needs to sell that particular piece of property. Whew!
Oh and let's not forget that Liens cost money and filing them at the court of Queens Bench does too. Then of course the time to do all this to keep updating your lien "in case" she sells and you get your money back. Kinda a lose-lose situation wouldn't you say?

Now in this particular incident, I had been asked to check on a Farm House that two young acquaintances of mine were renting. These acquaintances lived the life of musicians and often travelled and weren't home. On this particular occasion, I had thought that they had returned because while descending along the driveway, I noticed that the front door was opened. Once we had parked, I got out and went around the large hedges to greet my friends and bumped into none other than Marg Babe. Well not only was I floored to see her there, knowing she had been in the home, I was floored to find out she owned the place! I immediately went back to the car to grab my camera, snapped the shot and went home to call the police. It took about 3/4's of an hour to go home and return and again we found the front door wide open and Marg was in the home with a younger gent.

We waited 3 hours, parked across the driveway, but the RCMP never showed on the property. However they did show at our home the next day, almost 24 hours after the incident, with a report that we held her on the property with a loaded shotgun. I instantly thought that if that were the case, then why weren't they at our home, within half an hour of Marg Baby, apparently making the accusation? Bogus
The best part was, when the young couple returned, they were missing tools, documents, accessories and better yet, their L-shaped velvet sectional, had been urinated on! The odor was witnessed by the male party's Dad, his Mom and other half. Two of us here were present when they stopped by for the key to the local landfill to dump it off.
First Article of Slumlord's Series
Now this young couple had sanded the floors, repaired and painted the walls. They tiled the bathroom and repaired windows. The furnace went on the blink and on the ball Marg Baby, wouldn't put out the money to have it fixed. The required repairs were more than the rental itself and attention was needed to the matter.
Electrical heaters were being used, three to be exact and the electric bill was outrageous and far too much for the young couple to deal with. Marg never sent them a legal letter, nor did they send her one, which was an error unknown to them on their behalf. The only way they'd have known such a procedure is if they hads sought legal counsel, but young as they were, they had faith that the "Landlord" would do the right thing and repair the furnace, after all it is a necessity of life in Canada, but not so to Marg. Needless to say, the couple moved due to the lack of respect and justice, losing in many ways for no just reason.
With Landlords like this, in a struggling community, one need not wonder why it is struggling.
Well, that's it till next time, I hope you join us.
